Hand Building Techniques Pottery Series

This 8 week series includes instruction in a variety of different hand building projects and techniques for 6 weeks, followed by glazing application week 7 and 8 of each class series.

Hand building in clay is working off the wheel. Most commonly we instruct projects with sheets of clay (slab),  that we run through equipment called a slab roller. Students complete a project(s) each week with the use of patterns, forms, textures and step-by-step instruction.  Hand building is great fun and gives you the opportunity to create  very interesting and unique items that have lots of personality. You can get very artistic and imaginative with your work. Hand building is for those that want to learn quickly and see the results every class, so there is instant gratification.

Some of our Hand Building class series have included:

  • working outside the box
  • using the unusual
  • hump forms, cutting designs, textures
  • the perfect fitted lid
  • making a galleries for lids
  • making your own hump and slump forms, textures and stamps
  • techniques for glazing your work
  • learn to use and create patterns
  • studies of professional ceramic artist’s works and styles
  • use of slips and oxides
